It’s hard to describe what happened yesterday in week one of the college football season, but safe to say there were developments that could shape the rest of this season.

  • South Dakota State’s 41-38 win over Kansas gave the Jacks their first win against an FBS opponent in eight tries, the Jacks lost to the Jayhawks in 2012, but their seniors got some revenge Saturday. Jake Weineke showed on the national stage why he may be the best wide receiver in the FCS. Matt Zimmer recaps Saturday’s win.
  • UND had been in the same boat as SDSU, without a win against the FBS in seven previous games. Led by freshman running back John Santiago and a stifling defense, North Dakota got its first signature win as a D-1 program, beating Wyoming 24-13. This certainly has opened the eyes of some Bison fans and makes the September 19th game in Fargo even more interesting. Here are the highlights and recap from Phil Neumann in Laramie.
  • Montana was just over a minute away from starting 2-0, but the Griz saw Cal Poly methodically work down the field and then kick a game winning field goal with four seconds left to stun the Griz, 19-17 in Missoula. Here’s Saturday’s recap from the Missoulian.

Those were just some of the highlights on a wild and wacky Week 1. Illinois State was dismantled by Iowa, while Youngstown and Southern Illinois nearly picked up FBS wins of its own. It was a great week for the Big Sky, besides Montana’s win over NDSU, add in two FBS wins this weekend (UND’s win over Wyoming and Portland State knocking off Washington State). Only one team in the FCS top 10 won on Saturday, Coastal Carolina, and they barely won 38-35 over Furman. Later on, I’ll post my top 25 (which I have no idea to figure that out) but look for that as NDSU gets set to return to the field on Saturday.
